Idolatry - Red Carpet Religion

"IDOLATRY – Red Carpet Religion" is a video work filmed during the 2025 Venice Film Festival, on the red carpet where crowds gather in anticipation of the arrival of celebrities. The work conceptually reverses the direction of the gaze: the same visual focus usually aimed at idols is redirected toward the spectators themselves. IDOLATRY appropriates the collective viewfinder of cameras and smartphones and turns it onto the bodies, faces, and gestures of those waiting. The temporal dilation through image and sound contrasts with the speed and frenzy of the red carpet, allowing the apparent chaos of the moment to be opened up and examined rather than consumed. The work reflects on contemporary culture, the institutional event as spectacle, and the process of spectacularization itself.
